What is the key concept for this section Define and give three examples of environmental degradation ( natural capital degradation). About what percentage of the earth's natural or ecosystem services have been degraded by human activities Define pollution. Distinguish between point sources and nonpoint sources of pollution and give an example of each. Distinguish between pollution cleanup and pollution prevention. Describe three drawbacks to solutions that rely mostly on pollution cleanup. What is the tragedy of the commons and what are two ways to deal with it
Explanation
Environmental degradation is the depletion or decrease of natural resources by the increase in wastage, living un-sustainability. Forests are shrinking, deserts are expanding and topsoil is eroding are few examples of Environmental degradation. As per the study, 60% of the earth's natural or ecosystem services have been degraded by the human activities.
Pollution is the contamination of environment by the presence of harmful and poisonous effects. Point source of pollution is the immobile pollution. Municipal and industrial establishments are examples of point source of pollution.
The pollution is said to be non-point when the pollutants are mobile or non-stationary. Means of transport like buses, cars, bikes etc are examples of non-point of pollution.
Pollution cleanup means the process of cleaning of pollutants after we have produces them.
Pollution prevention is the steps taken for the elimination of pollutants before we produce them. We have relied mostly on the pollution cleanup but there are some problems with this approach. First of all, cleanup is a temporary plan as the population is increasing and so is the consumption of resource increasing. Secondly, it leaves one part of pollutants to other part of the environment. Lastly, once the pollutants are dispersed into the environment at harmful levels, it costs very high to reduce them.
Renewable resources like open oceans and fishes inside it can be used by anyone which have been degraded and is referred to as tragedy of commons. There are two easy to deal with it. One of them is that the harvesting level shall be restricted and so the amount of pollutants. The other way is to convert open renewable resources into private ownership which will have more protection norms.
