The Uniform Electronic Transactions Act, widely adopted by state legislatures, gives electronic records and signatures the same legal power as paper documents and manually signed signatures. Under Tennessee's adoption of the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act, attorneys' exchange of e-mails setting forth proposed settlement terms to resolve a family dispute over the ownership of a parcel of land was determined to create a signed, binding agreement, satisfying the state's Statute of Frauds.
