Interpersonal skills reflect the ability to communicate with, understand, and motivate individuals and groups. This exercise introduces a widely used tool for personality assessment. It shows how an understanding of personality can aid in developing effective interpersonal relationships within organizations.
Introduction: There are many different ways of viewing personality, and one that is widely used is called the MBTI According to Isabel Myers, each individual's personality type varies in four dimensions, which were discussed earlier.
On the basis of their answers to a survey, individuals are classified into 16 personality types-all the possible combinations of the four dimensions. The resulting personality type is then expressed as a four-character code, such as ESTP or INFJ. These four-character codes can then be used to describe an individual's preferred way of interacting with others. Instructions:
________ 1. Use an online Myers-Briggs assessment form to assess your personality type. One place to find the form online is http:// www.keirsey.com/sorter/register.aspx. This website also contains additional information about personality type. (Note: This site requires free registration, but you do not need to pay fees or agree to receive e-mails to take the Temperament Sorter.) Alternatively, your institution's Career Center or other organizations may offer a Myers-Briggs assessment service.
________ 2. When you have determined the four letter code for your personality type, obtain a handout from your professor. The handout will show how your personality type affects your preferred style of working and your leadership style.
