Rothman and colleagues differentiate three distinct models of community organization that can be applied to population health improvement:
a) locality development; b) social planning; and c) social action. Describe each of the models.
a. Locality development model recognizes the importance of engaging indigenous people, local residents and groups, as the community experts who are well positioned to inform selection of priority goals and development of interventions that fit culture and context.
b. Social planning model is an expert-based approach for addressing complex community health and development issues and focuses on providing technical solutions through the development and implementation of plans and policies.
c. Social action model focuses on mobilizing populations and groups experiencing disparities or inequalities in efforts to improve health and development outcomes.
Assuring conditions for health equity requires attention to social determinants of health (SDH). The WHO conceptual framework for action on social determinants outlines three levels of determinants that interact to affect equity in health and well-being. Discuss these levels of determinants and what they each influence.
The three determinants are:
a. Structural drivers (taxation, environmental protections, and policies; governance; societal norms)
b. Social position and stratification determinants (social class, race/ethnicity, education, income)
c. Intermediary determinants (material circumstances, behaviors, and biological factors; psychosocial factors; health care system)
