Exam 5: Report to a Client
Why is report writing such an important skill to master for business students?
A career in any medium-sized to large organisation will inevitably entail writing reports, and being able to produce a clear, useful report will facilitate professional development and help advance the writer's career. Moreover, report writing develops skills such as the ability to investigate a problem, to think critically and weigh sometimes opposing information, and to communicate clearly.
What mistake do students often make about writing an Executive summary?
A common mistake is to say what the report will present, rather than summarising what the report actually contains. For example, do not say, 'This report discusses the reasons underlying conflict between senior management and supervising
staff'; instead, say, 'The main reason underlying conflict at the Southland branch is senior management's insistence on detailed weekly reporting, which supervising staff see as inefficient and unnecessary'.
What are the key questions you must keep uppermost in your mind when writing a report?
The three key questions are (1) Who will read this?
(2) Why do they want the report?
(3) What do they expect?
A report asks for guidance on a difficult issue.
How does the Conclusions section of a report differ from the conclusion of an essay?
