Impression management consists of intentionally providing responses that make you look more favorable than you truly are. This is common in situations with high demand characteristics such as a job interview or first date. Conversely, while engaging in self-deceptive enhancement also makes you look better than you are, it is not a conscious effort. So, for example, you may say you enjoy and are better at math than you really are because of a poor self-concept, but if you were meeting with a career counselor she may guide you to a career in a STEM field that may not be a good fit because of the SDE response biases you exhibited.

Providing clear directions is a very good start. Also, requiring comparative judgments versus absolute judgments reduces likely response biases, as does having forced choice options that are equal in terms of social desirability. If you are trying to reduce response biases in rater, providing rater training tends to be beneficial.
