Exam 4: Problems of the Family
Women from the lower classes have almost always worked outside the home.
True
According to Heiner, the "median annual wage of a child-care worker in 2013 was just under $20,000." Construct a budget for a child-care worker earning $20,000 per year that is consistent with costs in your community. Remember to subtract approximately 20% of the salary for taxes. Also find the rates for child care in your community for infants, toddlers, and grade-school aged children. Can the child-care worker afford to have a child of his or her own in child care? Why or why not? Under what circumstances does it become possible?
Budget for a child-care worker earning $20,000 per year:
Income: $20,000
Taxes (20%): $4,000
Net Income: $16,000
Monthly Budget:
Rent: $800
Utilities: $150
Groceries: $250
Transportation: $100
Health Insurance: $100
Miscellaneous (clothing, personal care, etc.): $200
Total Monthly Expenses: $1,600
Child care rates in my community:
Infants: $1,200 per month
Toddlers: $1,000 per month
Grade-school aged children: $800 per month
Can the child-care worker afford to have a child of his or her own in child care?
Based on the budget and the average cost of child care in my community, it would be very difficult for the child-care worker to afford child care for their own child. The cost of child care for an infant alone would exceed the entire monthly budget, making it financially unfeasible for the child-care worker to have a child in child care while earning $20,000 per year.
Under what circumstances does it become possible?
It may become possible for the child-care worker to afford child care for their own child if they were able to increase their income through additional education or training, find a higher-paying job in the child care industry, or if they were able to access subsidized child care programs or assistance. Additionally, if the cost of child care in the community were to decrease, it may become more feasible for the child-care worker to afford child care for their own child.
