For both boys and girls, a four-part genitourinary examination is needed. First, do an abdominal examination to check for areas of tenderness, concentrating on the bladder and lower quadrants. Next, palpate the kidneys for CVA tenderness. Then palpate the inguinal area for lymph nodes slightly below the bend of the leg and hip. Lastly, check for the presence or absence of pubic hair, which should be consistent with age, and for any lice or nits.
