Level 1 listening is just hearing. At this level, a person hears the sounds but doesn't process the message. In Level 2 listening, the person listens just enough to make a loose connection with the speaker. At this level, the listener is only waiting for the other person to stop speaking, so that s/he can speak; time "listening"
is spent preparing what one wants to say next. Level 2 listening may also involve just taking in information without processing it. Level 3 is true listening. Here the listener has the intent of screening out irrelevant information and of registering and receiving what is being said. Level 4 is wholehearted, open listening, with the goal of understanding the message being sent. At this level, the listener is actively engaged in what the speaker is saying, and s/he attends to the meaning behind the words. Level 4 also involves using one's own verbal and nonverbal responses to indicate understanding.
