Exam 2: Changing Global Environment
What shapes the fundamental form of Earth's surface?
A
What is plate tectonics? What are the major types of plate movement and the landforms associated with them?
Plate tectonics is the scientific theory that describes the large-scale motion of Earth's lithosphere, which is divided into several large and small plates that float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere beneath them. These plates are in constant motion, and their interactions at plate boundaries are responsible for many of Earth's geological features, including earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain ranges.
There are three major types of plate movement: divergent boundaries, where plates move away from each other; convergent boundaries, where plates move towards each other and one is forced beneath the other in a process called subduction; and transform boundaries, where plates slide past each other horizontally.
Divergent boundaries are associated with landforms such as mid-ocean ridges and rift valleys, where new crust is formed as magma rises from the mantle and solidifies. Convergent boundaries are associated with landforms such as mountain ranges, volcanic arcs, and deep ocean trenches, where one plate is forced beneath another and intense geological activity occurs. Transform boundaries are associated with landforms such as strike-slip faults and earthquake activity, where plates slide past each other.
Overall, plate tectonics and the movement of Earth's plates are responsible for shaping the planet's surface and creating the diverse range of landforms that we see today.
