Role conflict occurs when different stakeholders have differing expectations of an individual's role. Role ambiguity arises when the role prescription contains contradictory elements or is vague. Katz and Kahn 1978 define role ambiguity as "uncertainly about what the occupant of particular office is supposed to do". These may lead to individuals confusing their roles and carrying out roles incorrectly causing tensions which in turn causes dysfunctional group performance and inconsistent organizational behavior.
