Deck 12: D: Mixed Design: Which Therapy Is Best for Treating Eating Disorders
1
What types of research designs are between-subject designs?
There are several different research designs that are commonly used in between-subjects research. The two-group design, the multigroup design, and the factorial design are all between-subject research designs. The mixed design is a combination of between-subject and within-subject designs.
2
What would be an example of a single-subject A-B-A design?
A behavioral intervention for anxiety may fit an A-B-A design. The child participant would have his or her anxiety measured prior to the intervention and then a behavioral intervention would be implemented to reduce or cope with anxiety symptoms. The anxiety intervention would then be removed and the child's anxiety levels would be reassessed again to determine any significant reduction.
3
How are the experimenter-expectancy effect and the double-blind procedure related?
The experimenter-expectancy effect occurs when bias causes a researcher to unconsciously or subtly influence the participants' responses and behaviors in an experiment. The double-blind procedure can be implemented to reduce any expectancies imposed by the experimenter by ensuring that the experimenter and administrators of the experiment are unaware of which treatment the participants have been assigned and the participants are also unaware of which treatment they have been assigned.
