Communication networks are formal and informal connections through which individuals use their relationships with others to send and receive messages. It is important to know that communication networks differ in terms of size, function, and centrality and dominance. Large networks that span an entire organization to send messages to all members of the organization are called "whole-system" networks. Small networks that link specific groups in the organization are called "clique" networks. Networks that are based on the personal relationships and contacts among individuals are called personal networks. Different communication networks serve different purposes. In dominant networks, one individual or group controls the flow of messages. Formal bureaucracies are dominant networks. A particularly strong informal network is the grapevine.
