Most Americans,and most American historians,have regarded the Louisiana Purchase as Jefferson's greatest achievement and one of the greatest in American history.Yet at the time many people,including Jefferson himself,had some doubts about it.Was there any genuine danger in acquiring such a vast territory? How might American history have been altered if the western U.S.border had remained at the Mississippi River?
