Your friend just received a D- on a foreign language exam that he took after having been out of town owing to a family emergency. Consequently, he did not have a chance to prepare. Without looking at the exam and analyzing which answers he got wrong, he has decided to drop the course because he does not feel he has the ability to pass it.
