In a study by Carney, Cuddy, and Yap (2010), some participants were asked to assume a power pose in which they propped their feet up on a desk while leaning back and interlocking their fingers behind their heads. The other half of participants assumed a more submissive pose in which they sat in a chair with their feet flat on the floor, with their arms tucked close to their body with their hands clasped on their laps. The participants who assumed the power pose later indicated that they felt more powerful than those who assumed a submissive pose and they acted more powerfully in a gambling task. In addition, a test of their saliva revealed that the participants in the power pose condition had higher levels of testosterone (a dominance-related hormone) and lower levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) in their bodies compared to the participants who assumed the submissive pose.
