Evaluate the following scenario and identify the nature and most likely sources of the resistance to change on the part of Stephen Hodges.Be sure to clarify any assumptions that you make in developing your answer.
Three weeks ago,Virginia Mower Manufacturing (a maker of generic lawnmowers that are sold under store brand names)instituted a change in procedure in an attempt to improve customer satisfaction.Under the new procedure, the production foreperson is supposed to notify both the sales and shipping department when an order is scheduled for production,in addition to the notification that production has been completed.Stephen Hodges is in charge of the third shift, and resents this new regulation as just an additional, unnecessary imposition of paperwork on his already overloaded job.Even though he tries to keep the new procedures in mind along with the numerous other things that he is responsible for in his job,Stephen has frequently forgotten to send the appropriate notifications when an order is scheduled for production. This has led to significant feelings of stress and frustration for Stephen.Stephen has an otherwise outstanding record as a supervisor and team player. He believes that the problem is related to the dramatic increase in his workload due to significantly increased company sales, turnover in his unit, and difficulties in recruiting replacement workers at the allowable company wage in the current tight job market.
