Distinguish between how short-term memory is stored and how long-term memory is stored.
Short-term memories involve transient modifications in functions of preexisting synapses, such as altering the amount of neurotransmitter released. Long-term memories involve relatively permanent functional or structural changes between existing neurons, such as formation of new synapses.
