In unequal societies, access to healthcare is largely determined by wealth. Impoverished people are less healthy and have shorter life expectancies because they cannot afford to see a doctor until their conditions are bad enough to visit the hospital. Wealthier citizens can afford to make preventative doctor visits and seek treatment earlier in the progression of a disease. Everyone in more equal societies is healthier because poor people have less reason to choose risky behaviors like violent crimes, since they are not desperately mired in poverty. Since wealthy people are sometimes targets of crime, they would have a reduced likelihood of being victimized. Another reason everyone benefits from a more equal society is that housing conditions are less likely to be crowded and unsanitary, so there are fewer people to spread infection or disease than otherwise.
