Exam 6: Enterprise Wireless Hardware Security
What is the problem solved by the Inter-Access Point Protocol (IAPP)?
The original 802.11 standard did not specify how communications were to take place between access points to support users roaming from one area of AP coverage to another. Rather than being an oversight, this was intended. The committee wanted to provide flexibility in environments using different distribution systems, such as a wired backbone that may interconnect with an AP. Yet this lack of standardization caused problems. An AP from one vendor handled the handoff in one way whereas that from another vendor implemented a different solution. The result was that access points from different vendors did not always interoperate when a wireless user roamed from one vendor's AP to another vendor's.
To solve this problem, IEEE 802.11F recommended practice was created. Using the Inter-Access Point Protocol (IAPP), 802.11F specified information that access points need to exchange to support WLAN roaming.
What are the two basic functions of an access point?
An access point has two basic functions. First, the access point acts as the base station for the wireless network. All of the devices that have a wireless NIC can transmit to the AP, which in turn redirects the signal to the other wireless devices. The second function of an AP is to act as a bridge between wireless and wired networks. The AP can be connected to the standard network by a cable, allowing the wireless devices to access the data network through it.
A(n) ____ wireless mesh network connects special access points, known as wireless mesh routers, in a mesh configuration.
B
A ____ is a device that is used to connect two network segments together, even if those segments use different types of physical media, such as wired and wireless connections.
In a wired network a ____ is a hardware device that joins multiple computers within one local area network (LAN).
What are the four operational mode supported by remote wireless bridges?
The IEEE ____ task group has been working on wireless QoS since May 2000.
Remote wireless bridges are a cost-effective alternative to expensive leased wired options for connecting remote buildings.
The 802.11 MAC layer ____________________ mode is contention-based and supports different "streams" (types) of traffic.
What are some of the functions performed by an enterprise wireless gateway?
In EDCA, the four different streams, called ____, are differentiated in terms of priority.
A(n) ____ switch supports both control and monitoring of the network.
Using the ____, 802.11F specified information that access points need to exchange to support WLAN roaming.
The IEEE ____ protocol allows a wireless client to determine the QoS (and security) being used at a different AP before making the transition.
In the ____ access control, an administrator can assign permissions to a position and assign users and other objects to that position.
Instead of having only a single path through which data can travel, a(n) ____ network provides multiple paths.
A backhaul wireless mesh network provides alternative data paths for the "backside" connection to the Internet (that is, from the routers to the Internet, called the ____________________).
The 802.11 MAC layer ____________________ mode is based upon polling and serves as a centralized scheduling mechanism.
A ____ is a network device that transfers packets between networks.
