TeamSTEPPS was developed by the Department of Defense's Patient Safety Program in collaboration with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). TeamSTEPPS is a comprehensive, evidence-based teamwork system created for use by healthcare organizations to develop a culture of safety. Central aims of TeamSTEPPS include improving communication and teamwork skills among healthcare professionals. The TeamSTEPPS approach uses assessment and training tools to develop teams that work to improve patient outcomes. Clear roles and responsibilities are emphasized, as well as methods to improve communication, thereby reducing conflicts. Barriers to achieving and maintaining a culture of safety and quality are addressed.
