A material that light can pass through is called transparent. Materials that light cannot pass through are called opaque. Materials that permit some, but not all, light to pass through are called translucent. As light passes from one medium to another, it is bent, or refracted. Light traveling through air bends as it enters water, glass, or clear plastic. This bending, or refraction, of light waves can be put to good use. A lens, for example, changes the appearance of objects because the image we see through the lens is produced by rays of light that have been bent. Eyeglasses, microscopes, hand lenses, and telescopes all provide images formed by light rays that have been refracted.

Energy (capacity to do work or produce change) is present whenever there are moving objects. The higher a mass is lifted, the more potential it has to transfer energy and do work on its way down. Hence, this stored energy is referred to as potential energy. Once the potential energy is transferred through movement, it is referred to as kinetic energy.
