Answer would ideally include: The research question should require more than a yes/no answer because the researcher seeks to discover (i.e., provide an answer to) much more about the relationship between variables, not simply whether or not it exists. In some situations, it may be acceptable to state a research question as a yes/no question but only if it is followed up with a more specific subquestion.

Answer would ideally include: Hypothesis statements can also be used to guide research studies. They are tentative but well-informed guesses about the potential findings of the study, made before the study begins. However, compared with research questions, their use is much more limited. Hypotheses are used only in association with quantitative research studies, but they are not appropriate for all types of quantitative research studies. Hypotheses are only appropriate when the research design requires the use of inferential statistical analyses. Inferential statistics (which you will learn more about in Chapter 13) are also sometimes referred to as hypothesis tests for this reason. Hypothesis statements are usually included in experimental, correlational, and some comparative research designs, all of which are, of course, quantitative methodologies.
