Ferdinand Tönnies distinguished between two types of social groupings-Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft. What is the difference between the two? Which one did you experience prior to starting your postsecondary education? Explain.
Ferdinand Tönnies distinguished between Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft as two different types of social groupings. Gemeinschaft refers to a community or society based on personal and intimate relationships, where individuals have strong bonds and a sense of belonging. This type of grouping is characterized by close-knit relationships, shared values, and a strong sense of community. On the other hand, Gesellschaft refers to a society based on impersonal and formal relationships, where individuals interact based on their roles and obligations. This type of grouping is characterized by a more individualistic and transactional approach to relationships, with less emphasis on personal connections and more focus on functional interactions.
Prior to starting my postsecondary education, I experienced a combination of both Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft. In my immediate family and close-knit community, I experienced Gemeinschaft, where relationships were based on personal connections, shared values, and a strong sense of community. However, in larger social settings such as school or work, I experienced Gesellschaft, where interactions were more formal and based on roles and obligations rather than personal connections. Overall, I would say that my experience leaned more towards Gemeinschaft, as personal relationships and a sense of community were more prevalent in my social experiences prior to starting my postsecondary education.
