-Fathers may engage in more rousing physical play than mothers do. This may include rough-and tumble play and run-and chase play. These types of play may be more evident with male children than with females.
-Fathers are more likely to lift babies, bounce them, and move their arms and legs.
-Mothers are more likely to offer toys or play conventional games such as "peek-a-boo" or "pat-a-cake."
-Mothers may seem more in tune with their child's needs than do fathers. Mothers may allow more exploration and choice of activities.
-Fathers may direct the play and the choice of activities rather than have the child direct the play. They may also use objects in nonconventional ways.
-Mothers use more instructive play with infants than fathers do. Mothers may name objects, extend language, etc. more than fathers do.
-Fathers may be more tactile or touch oriented than mothers, while mothers may be more verbally oriented during play interactions.
Do you think these play differences might be responsible for socializing children at a very young age into culturally-defined gender roles? Why or why not?
-I do think this plays a part in the socialization process. We learn from interactions with others and therefore, as children come to identify with a gender, they will further integrate behavior patterns of others of the same gender. For example, female children may display the same behaviors and patterns of interactions as their female caregivers, such as: playing with dolls, rocking dolls, cooking, etc. We are social learners and therefore, learn from social contexts, particularly those involving a parent or caregiver.
