Skin tone is based on the amount of melanin present in the human skin.The huge range of skin tones is related to the fact that at least three genes are involved in determining the amount of melanin you inherit.During our lives,our bodies are exposed to sources of ultraviolet radiation,which leads to DNA damage in skin cells.One response to this damage is the production of extra melanin,leading to tanning of the skin.Based on this knowledge,is the amount of melanin in skin cells polygenic,multifactorial,or both?
