Another issue caregivers face is the effect on their employment prospects. Some are unable to undertake paid employment because of the time they spend providing care. Up to 58% juggle their caregiving role with either full- or part-time work. Nearly 7 in 10 (69%) caregivers report making work accommodations because of caregiving. These adjustments include disruptions in usual work schedules from needing to arrive later or leave earlier, needing time off, reducing work hours, changing jobs to discontinuing work entirely. They may also have to start financially supporting the care recipient, and this, coupled with the loss of potential earning, may lead to economic hardship. In fact, more than one in four caregivers report a moderate to high degree of financial hardship as a result of caregiving. This aspect of caregiving may not be such a problem for shorter-term caregivers, but as caregiving becomes a full-time occupation in itself, it can lead to many financial difficulties. Reduction in income may affect the caregiver's ability to save, force him or her to reduce or cease contributions made to his or her pension programs, and lose vital benefits such as health care coverage. Another scenario is that as one source of household income ceases, the spouse of a caregiver may be forced to increase his or her work hours to compensate and may even be forced to abandon personal retirement plans.
