After researching effective teachers, Allington (2002) found that all effective teachers provided six elements to a reading event. Name and describe these elements. How do you plan to incorporate these elements into your lessons when you teach?
The six elements that effective teachers provide to a reading event, as identified by Allington (2002), are:
1. Access to a wide range of reading materials: Effective teachers ensure that students have access to a variety of reading materials, including books, magazines, and digital resources, to cater to different interests and reading levels.
2. Ample time for reading: Effective teachers allocate sufficient time for students to engage in independent reading, allowing them to practice and develop their reading skills at their own pace.
3. Opportunities for students to choose what they read: Effective teachers empower students by allowing them to choose their own reading materials, which increases motivation and engagement in the reading process.
4. Support for students' reading efforts: Effective teachers provide support and guidance to students as they navigate through challenging texts, offering assistance when needed and fostering a positive reading environment.
5. Opportunities for students to respond to their reading: Effective teachers encourage students to reflect on and respond to their reading through discussions, writing activities, and creative projects, promoting deeper comprehension and critical thinking skills.
6. Opportunities for students to talk about their reading with others: Effective teachers create opportunities for students to share and discuss their reading experiences with peers, fostering a sense of community and collaboration in the reading process.
Incorporating these elements into my lessons when I teach, I plan to provide a diverse selection of reading materials for students to choose from, allocate dedicated time for independent reading, and offer support and guidance as they engage with the texts. I will also encourage students to share their thoughts and responses to their reading with their peers, fostering a collaborative and interactive reading environment. Additionally, I will empower students by allowing them to choose their own reading materials and provide opportunities for them to reflect on and respond to their reading through various activities. By incorporating these elements, I aim to create a positive and engaging reading experience for my students, promoting their literacy skills and fostering a love for reading.
