Correct Answer:

Aerobic respiration uses oxygen, while anerobic metabolism does not use oxygen. Aerobic and anaerobic respiration differ in their final electron acceptors. Aerobic respiration uses oxygen and fermentation uses pyruvic acid while other forms of anerobic respiration use inorganic molecules (such as nitrate, nitrite and sulfate).
Along with glycolysis, fermentation is anaerobic respiration. Fermentation can occur when no oxygen is present,so microorganisms that carry out fermentation would have an advantage in circumstances where oxygen is rare. In addition,a wide range of carbohydrates and proteins can serve as substrates for microbial fermentation, which allows for microorganisms that ferment to have an advantage when glucose and other substances that feed into the Krebs cycle are rare.
