Should a society attempt to eliminate all forms of deviance? Why or why not? Base your answer on one of the theories of deviance discussed in the textbook.
According to the social control theory of deviance, society should not attempt to eliminate all forms of deviance. This theory suggests that deviance is a natural and inevitable part of society, and that attempts to completely eliminate it would be futile. Instead, the focus should be on controlling and managing deviant behavior through social institutions such as family, education, and the criminal justice system.
Furthermore, the social control theory argues that a certain level of deviance is necessary for social change and progress. For example, civil rights movements and protests have been considered deviant at the time, but they ultimately led to positive changes in society. Therefore, completely eliminating all forms of deviance could stifle innovation and social evolution.
Instead of striving for complete elimination of deviance, society should focus on understanding the root causes of deviant behavior and addressing them through social support, education, and rehabilitation. By providing resources and opportunities for individuals to integrate into society in a positive way, society can effectively manage and reduce deviant behavior without attempting to completely eradicate it.
