Jim Crow laws: sets of laws that codified the oppression of formerly enslaved African Americans in the southern states. After the Civil War, African Americans gained emancipation, but they were not equal, segregation and discrimination were still in place. A landmark decision made by the U.S. Supreme Court (1896) called Plessey v. Ferguson "separate but equal" formally segregated African Americans into second-class status. The consequences of slavery and its aftermath are a part of the collective memory and culture of the community. In a culturally grounded approach, social workers can honor the history of African Americans by implementing interventions that work with African American families, traditions, struggles and resiliency.
