Exam 12: Adolescence: Emotional and Social Development
What is meant by youth culture? What are its trademarks and what qualities are valued by youth culture?
Youth culture consists of standardized ways of thinking, acting, and feeling that are adopted by a large percentage of young people. It manifests itself in peer-group trademarks such as particular forms of dress and body art; distinctive ways of speaking; and preferred music and entertainment idols. Ideas about qualities and achievements are important in youth culture, with differing ideas for males and females. For males, the critical signs of masculinity include athletic skill, physical mastery, sexual prowess, risk taking, willingness to defend one's honor at all costs, and courage in the face
of danger and aggression. For females, the most admired traits include physical attractiveness, the ability to delicately manipulate certain interpersonal relationships, personal vivaciousness, and skill in exercising control over sexual encounters. Overall, the two qualities that are essential to obtaining a high status in adolescent society are the ability to project an air of confidence about one's masculinity or femininity and the ability to deliver a smooth performance in a variety of situations and settings.
