Forms of spiritual and religious expression, such as mediation and prayer are thought to buffer the impact of challenges such as illness, retirement and widowhood. Religions can provide a cognitive framework that accept painful event over the life course.
As a social worker encourage the person to incorporate the beliefs he/she has as a source of strength and inclusion with other interventions.
The ethical dilemma is one of preserving the person's self-determination vs. best interests. The social worker could work with the person to insure he/she understands the options and the consequences of one option over the other.
