Exam 12: Working With Older Adults Support Systems in Caregiving
Describe what is meant by caregiver burden and what are some strategies to alleviate it?
Care giver burden is the degree of stress caregivers feel in response to their caretaking. The stresses of caregiving can accumulate. Even in low task caregiving, individuals may feel a high degree of burden, depending on their personality, emotional reactions and relationship to the care receiver. One of the biggest problems is the lack of reciprocity in the relationship. If the caregiver is getting nothing back (particularly frequent in care for people with dementia) the caregiver can feel depleted. One critical area is in the psychological burden resulting from the lack of emotional reciprocity. There is an absence of exchange of emotional needs and the caregiver may feel depressed or lonely. The tasks of caregiving can lead to emotional and social isolation. This may lead to both physical and mental problems. Of course, the dynamics of the relationship is critical.
