I decided to borrow a wheelchair from my university's office for disabled students for this experiment. I spent about four hours using the chair, going to classes, and doing some shopping at the local mall. I made sure to go to places where I would encounter strangers and interact with people I didn't know.
My experience was eye-opening. I found that some people did avoid me, either by quickly looking away or by physically moving out of my path. It was clear that some individuals felt uncomfortable and didn't know how to react to someone in a wheelchair. On the other hand, there were also many people who looked me in the eyes and treated me with the same respect as they would anyone else. I had a few individuals offer to hold doors open for me or assist me with reaching items in the store, which was a kind gesture.
Overall, I felt a mix of emotions during this experience. There were moments where I felt frustrated by the lack of consideration from some people and the challenges of navigating spaces in a wheelchair. However, there were also instances where I felt grateful for the kindness and understanding shown by others.
In analyzing the reactions of others, it was clear that some people were unsure of how to interact with someone using a wheelchair. This led to avoidance or discomfort in their body language and interactions. On the other hand, those who treated me with respect and offered assistance showed empathy and understanding.
This experience highlighted the importance of inclusivity and empathy towards individuals with disabilities. It also shed light on the challenges and misconceptions that people with disabilities may face in their daily lives. It was a valuable learning experience that made me more aware of the importance of creating an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone, regardless of their abilities.
