The four functions of management are planning, organizing, directing and controlling.
Planning involves deciding what is desirable to occur in the future. Managers try to anticipate what will happen, and how their organizations should respond to events. Also, managers try to design proactive behaviors on the part of their own organizations that will result in greater success. Planning occurs at several levels: top (strategic goal setting and planning); middle (functional or divisional objective setting and planning); and supervisory (operational objectives and plans).
Organizing involves creating a design for jobs and units that will fulfill the organization's mission. Also, it encompasses allocating people and resources within the resulting structure.
Directing involves communicating goals and objectives to members, and motivating employees to accomplish their jobs toward these ends.
Controlling means measuring the performance of the organization and its parts to check whether appropriate progress toward goals is being made.
