It is in this context that the 21st century has seen a growing focus on sustainability. The focus on sustainability has increased as large countries like Brazil, China and India have grown. On the one hand, the growth of emerging markets is improving global living standards in a way that perhaps has not happened before in human history. On the other hand, this growth puts pressure on resources and the environment in a way that has also never happened before. It has become increasingly clear that if supply chains do not become much more sustainable than they have been in the past, the world's resources and environment cannot sustain this level of growth.
