Powerful people are characterized by the ability determine the outcomes others experience. For example a powerful person might have the ability to hire and fire employees, determine who gets promoted, who gets a raise, who has to perform undesirable tasks, etc. One easy way for people to feel more powerful is to have them assume a "power pose." In a study by Carney, Cuddy, and Yap (2010), some participants were asked to assume a power pose in which they propped their feet up on a desk while leaning back and interlocking their fingers behind their heads. The other half of participants assumed a more submissive pose in which they sat in a chair with their feet flat on the floor, with their arms tucked close to their body with their hands clasped on their laps. The participants who assumed the power pose later indicated that they felt more powerful than those who assumed a submissive pose and they acted more powerfully in a gambling task. In addition, a test of their saliva revealed that the participants in the power pose condition had higher levels of testosterone (a dominance-related hormone) and lower levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) in their bodies compared to the participants who assumed the submissive pose.

Cheryl recently joined a book club. After attending the first few meetings, Cheryl quickly learned that the group members spend very little time discussing the actual book and most of the time gossiping about the other members who were not there. Cheryl quickly followed suit and spent little time actually reading the books and more time learning what she could about the other members. The changes that occurred that allowed Cheryl to both join and fit in with this group is known as _________.
