The idea behind selective inhibition is to reduce the pain and inflammation while minimizing the side effects associated with the inhibition of COX-1, which is responsible for the protective effects in the stomach and involvement in platelet function.
It is important to note that not all analgesics work by inhibiting prostaglandins. For example, acetaminophen (paracetamol) is considered an analgesic and antipyretic (fever reducer) and is thought to have a weak anti-inflammatory effect, but its exact mechanism of action is not fully understood.
