Environmental Diplomacy is the idea that negotiations among nations will play a large role in determining our success at solving environmental problems and creating a sustainable global society. Such negotiations will be necessary because, although different nations have different priorities, the world they all share is one, and it must be managed in a way that all can live healthy lives. Many global problems require local solutions, requiring that each country work within its own borders for the good of the planet. Examples given will vary, but one is the biodiversity crisis, and the importance to the entire world of the ecosystem services provided by organisms. Globally, the Amazon rain forest removes massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, reducing atmospheric concentration of a key greenhouse gas, and moderating climate change around the world. However, the condition of the rainforest is dependent on local and national policy in nations such as Brazil; thus a global environmental issue can be strongly affected by local events occurring within a given country. To make sure that the needs of all the world's citizens are addressed by policy on national and local scales, while still meeting the needs of local citizens, will require a great deal of diplomacy. Another example is the production of greenhouse gases; the United States and other developed nations produce much more than developing nations, while in many cases, developing nations in areas such as Africa are expected to experience the worst effects of global climate change. Again, diplomacy will be needed to forge environmental policies that take into account the interest of the citizens of the entire world.
