Exam 22: Imperialism and Colonialism,1870–1914
What was the role of the East India Company in British control of India?
Unlike North America,India never became a settler state.Europeans were a tiny minority there. The East India Company exercised control throughout the area, with its own military and administration with which it divided India into a series of districts.Operating on a subcontinent that was politically and religiously divided, the Company initially offered various Indian princes allies and assistance, militarily and otherwise, against their enemies. In payment for such services, the Company got preferential trade agreements, held the right to collect taxes from Indian peasants, and had legal monopolies over all trade goods, including opium.Because the profit motive ruled Company actions and behaviors, the Company's government was oppressive and military.Soldiers collected taxes and civil servants wore military uniforms.Since control was difficult in an area in which they were outnumbered, the Company made use of indigenous collaborators and offered economic privileges, state offices,or military posts to groups and nations that allied with them against common enemies.
