For each of the following concepts, provide an example from the book or from your own life.
-Establishing operation (EO)
An establishing operation (EO) is a condition that increases the effectiveness of a consequence and makes a behavior more likely to occur. In the book "Behavior Analysis for Lasting Change" by G. Roy Mayer, Beth Sulzer-Azaroff, and Michele Wallace, an example of an establishing operation is when a child is deprived of food for a period of time, making the consequence of receiving food more reinforcing and increasing the likelihood of the child engaging in behavior to obtain food.
In my own life, an example of an establishing operation is when I am sleep-deprived. When I haven't had enough sleep, the consequence of getting to bed and resting becomes more reinforcing, making me more likely to engage in behaviors to ensure I get enough sleep, such as turning off electronic devices and creating a relaxing bedtime routine.
