Describe the different influence styles.
The three primary types of influence styles are pushing, pulling, and moving away. These styles define how energy moves from one person to another. Pushing styles are directed from one person to others; these styles include persuading and asserting. With these approaches, a person attempts to push his or her opinions and perspectives on others through reasoning and/or the application of incentives or pressures. Pulling styles involve bridging and attracting where an individual attempts to draw information from others to seek some common ground. The moving away style, as the name implies, involves disengaging from a situation and opting out of the influence process for a period of time. Managers tend to use the pull strategies when managing up and laterally, and the push strategies when managing down.
