I can think of a time when my high school basketball coach really expected me to perform well. He always treated me as if I would do well and constantly pushed me to improve. His high expectations for me strongly influenced my success on the court. I found myself working harder, practicing more, and pushing myself to meet his expectations. As a result, I became a better player and had a successful season.
This experience is a perfect example of the Pygmalion effect, which is the phenomenon where higher expectations lead to an increase in performance. My coach's belief in my abilities and his positive reinforcement motivated me to work harder and ultimately perform better. It's amazing how much of an impact someone's belief in you can have on your own belief in yourself and your ability to succeed. This experience taught me the power of high expectations and how they can positively influence performance.
