The main difference between manufacturing and service organizations is that the output of manufacturing will always be a physical product, such as an automobile or a piece of furniture. The output of service organizations lacks physical properties, things like an airplane flight, a ride in a taxi, or a day at a theme park.
The distinction between manufacturing and service organizations is important. The consumer of a manufactured product is primarily concerned with whether the product meets his or her expectations in terms of its physical properties. The consumer rarely sees who made the product, or knows whether the person that made the product was in a cheerful mood or a bad mood when the product was made. In contrast, the consumer of a service product is primarily concerned with the manner in which the service is delivered. The person delivering the service is also important. If the waiters at a restaurant are rarely cheerful, it adversely affects the quality of the restaurant's service product. These issues must be carefully considered by the managers of manufacturing and service organizations, so that the most salient issues in each type of firm can be emphasized.
